What we collect and why
We collect personal data only when you choose to give it to us, plus the minimum technical data needed to run and protect the site.
- Comments on news articles
- Your name, email address, comment and language, plus a scrambled one-way code (a hash) derived from your IP address that helps us stop abuse. Comments are reviewed before they appear. Once approved, your name and comment are public; your email address is never shown.
- Contact form
- Your name, email address, phone number if you give it, subject and message. We use them only to reply to you.
- Join us form
- Your name and email address and, if you give them, your phone number, organisation, region and message, along with how you would like to take part. We use them to reply and to organise your participation.
- Newsletter
- Your email address and preferred language, so that we can send you climate briefings. Every email includes a link to unsubscribe.
- Ask Prime AI
- Your questions and the conversation are sent to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, to produce answers. We do not store your conversations. We keep only daily totals of how many questions were asked and how much processing they used, with no content and nothing that identifies you. Please do not include personal information in your questions.
- Technical and security data
- Like every website, ours receives your IP address and basic browser information. They are used to deliver pages and to protect the site, for example by limiting repeated form submissions. Our forms may also use Cloudflare Turnstile, a security check that helps us tell people apart from automated spam.
How long we keep data
- News articles are deleted automatically one year after publication, together with their comments.
- Contact and join requests are kept for as long as we need them to reply to you and to manage your participation, and are then deleted.
- Newsletter addresses are kept while you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we stop writing to you straight away; ask us and we will delete your address completely.
- Ask Prime AI usage totals are kept for about 13 months to manage our budget. They contain no personal data.
- Staff sign-in sessions are deleted when they expire.
Your rights
Under Tanzania's Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, you can ask us to:

- correct data that is wrong or incomplete;
- delete your data;
