A new study has found that global warming is increasing the proportion of annual rainfall delivered by extreme downpours. This trend is projected to intensify with higher temperatures, threatening water management, agriculture, and infrastructure. The study used the Extreme Precipitation Dependency Index to measure the trend, which shows that rain-fed croplands and urban systems may face greater risks from both flooding and prolonged dry spells. The findings highlight the need for urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change.
